Active Breakfast Clubs

The new Government plans to require every primary school to provide free breakfast clubs, ensuring all children are well prepared for the school day and can achieve their full potential. These resources will support you to make your breakfast club an active breakfast club.

Overview

Free school breakfasts will be included within the Children’s Wellbeing Bill, set to begin its journey through Parliament this Autumn. We recognise the need for every child to have a nutritional breakfast to provide a positive start to the day, ensuring they are ready to learn and be active.

In our view, schools should be encouraged to explore different ways to provide school breakfasts through a flexible approach allowing them to be led by pupil’s needs and priorities. Where possible, this should include using school breakfasts, including through breakfast clubs, as an opportunity for children to be physically active before the start of the school day.

Much like a healthy breakfast, evidence tells us that access to daily physical activity can also help to regulate emotions, improve concentration, build friendships and enhance learning. One way of supporting children to benefit from both is by providing them with access to an Active Breakfast. Active breakfasts enable children to benefit from both healthy breakfasts and physical activity, supporting children to be ready to learn and helping them achieve the recommended 60 active minutes a day. To support you in considering whether this approach could work for your school, we have created some simple guidance, top tips and case studies from schools successfully delivering active breakfast clubs.
