Why Inclusive Sportswear matters
We know that the right PE and sports kit can have a direct impact on participation, confidence, and overall enjoyment of physical activity. Unfortunately, too many young people are put off by restrictive, uncomfortable, or unsuitable kit that does not reflect their needs, backgrounds, or identities.
Research from our Girls Active survey shows that:
- Only 33% of girls feel confident in their PE kit, dropping to 23% by Key Stage 4 (KS4).
- 58% of secondary-age girls and 29% of boys want more kit options.
- Many kits fail to support young people with disabilities, neurodiversity, religious beliefs, or financial constraints.
We believe this is an unnecessary barrier that can and must be removed.
The Inclusive Sportswear Charter
The Inclusive Sportswear Charter provides a practical framework for schools to ensure that all young people can feel comfortable, confident, and able to participate fully in PE and sport. By embedding the Charter in school kit policies and practices, schools can help young people feel included, empowered, and motivated to stay active.
How schools can take action
Through our role in leading the Schools Guidance, we are helping schools to:
- Review and update their PE and sports kit policies
- Empower young people by giving them a voice in kit decisions
- Access expert advice on inclusive kit solutions for all students, including guidance on faith, disability, neurodiversity, and affordability
- Join the movement to make inclusive PE and sports kit the norm, not the exception.
We encourage all schools to pledge their commitment to the Inclusive Sportswear Charter and access the support available through the Inclusive Sportswear Community Platform. Together, we can create a more inclusive future where every young person - regardless of background or identity - feels comfortable, confident, and excited to take part in PE and sport.
