In 2017, the Youth Sport Trust conducted a school survey to understand more deeply what was happening to the amount of time allocated to the teaching of PE within the curriculum. It revealed a stark finding, that 38% of secondary schools had cut time on the curriculum for PE since the London 2012 Olympics.
At the same time, Government data on subject hours delivered showed a decline since the London 2012 Olympics in terms of numbers of hours of PE taught.
In Autumn 2022, the Youth Sport Trust conducted new analysis of the Government data and repeated the secondary school survey to create a picture of the current situation for schools in England.
This report provides a summary of the key findings from both research activities and, where relevant, a comparison to the 2017/18 survey data.
