Providing practical tools and resources
Bringing together communities of educators
The challenges we face
Children in England are facing significant challenges:
- 1 in 5 children and young people in England have a probable mental health disorder
- 1 in 5 children in England are overweight or obese by the time they are five years old
- 83% of parents believe that children are spending too much time online and not enough with each other in person.
Read more about these issues in our annual PE and School Sport report - last published June 2024.
But the Youth Sport Trust can create change. Those who work with us tell us that they have seen:
- 82% improvement in children's school engagement
- 76% improvement in children's confidence
- 69% improvement in children's behaviour
- 73% improvement in children's resilience
- 69% of children feel more connected.

Youth Sport Trust Strategy 2022-2035
Inspiring Changemakers, Building belonging
Starting locally and building momentum, we will galvanise and inspire changemakers to transform attitudes, improve practice and drive policy change.
Together we will harness the power of play and sport to build belonging for a generation, improving their health, fostering inclusion and developing character and leadership.
Objectives to 2035:
- Urgent action - To build back healthier, happier and more resilient young people, and level the playing field for those most disadvantaged.
- Generational shift - To balance the demands of the digital age through the human connection of physical play and sport.
- Societal change - To transform society’s perceptions and attitudes towards the importance of physical literacy, play and sport in the education and development of young people.

Manifesto - Improving children and young people’s wellbeing and achievement
We want a new, long-term joined-up national plan guaranteeing every child access to the UK’s Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO’s) guidance of 60 active minutes a day:
- Create a nation of active and well schools and put physical activity at the heart of every school and community
- Improve coordination across government departments and make increasing children’s activity levels a priority across Whitehall
- Include long-term joined-up policy and funding aligned to clear measurements and targets
- Deliver a national campaign to raise awareness of the UK’s CMO’s guidance.
