Beyond Black History month: Elevating diverse voices in Youth Sport and education

This Black History Month, we’ve been working to elevate diverse voices in youth sport and education, from leadership programs to the Include Summit and beyond. Read more about how we’re championing inclusion and tackling inequalities.

As part of #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re proud to highlight our efforts to elevate diverse voices across youth, sport and education. This October, we’ve launched a leadership development program to support PE leaders from diverse backgrounds, engaged our Youth Board at the Include Summit, and hosted our SSASP Summit featuring young changemakers pushing for diversity in sports governance. We also proudly sponsored the Sporting Equals Young Sportsperson of the Year Award. Our work to tackle inequalities and embedded diversity ongoing read more below to see how we’re driving change.

Throughout October, we've been recruiting PE leaders from ethnic diverse communities to take part in a leadership developmental programme to ensure the charity is better positioned to support educators from these communities. To date we've recruited 9 incredible leaders, and the first workshop will take place next month.

Find out more about the intent of the initiative here.

Earlier this month, members of our Youth Board attended the Include Summit, the UK's largest diversity and inclusion summit for sport, where representatives from across the sector looked at the changes required to ensure that the sport sector better reflects society as a whole.

You can find out more about the summit and the agenda here.

We also hosted more than 100 partners at our annual School Sport and Activity Sector Partnership (SSASP) Summit where we hosted a panel discussion involving the young changemakers who delivered the Unified Action Framework to diversify sports governance. The panel shared their learnings and recommendations and challenged the sector to make considered approaches to ensure the barriers young people from diverse backgrounds face are addressed.

You can read a summary of the event here.

Finally, we were very proud to be able to sponsor the Sporting Equals Young Sportsperson of the year Award, which was awarded to Kai Hockley. Kai was first introduced to sailing by The Greig City Academy in Haringey, a school which the charity has a long history of collaborating with.

You can read more about Kai's achievements here.

Whilst #BlackHistoryMonth will soon be drawing to a close, our work to tackle inequalities and deepen the diversity of our decision making is far from complete. Stay tuned to our social channels to find out more about the work we're undertaking and let us know below what else you feel we should be doing to address systemic issues facing global majority communities.
