On World Children’s Day (20 November), the Youth Sport Trust proudly hosted the Young Changemaker Awards 2024, sponsored by the LEGO® Group. These awards shine a spotlight on exceptional young people who, through their involvement with Youth Sport Trust and Youth Sport Trust International over the past year, have created meaningful and lasting change in their lives and the lives of others.

From championing inclusion to inspiring participation in sport and play, these remarkable young leaders have been recognised for their contributions to Physical Education, physical activity, play, and school sport.

Young Activist Award Winner: Lily

Lily has been awarded the Young Activist Award for her exceptional leadership and dedication to advocating for neurodiverse individuals in sport. From her experience in the Young Ambassadors Programme, Lily has partnered with Hoci Cymru, Cardiff and Met Hockey Club, and Cardiff Met University to create a coaching education tool aimed at making sessions inclusive, safe, and fun for neurodiverse participants.

Building on this work, Lily launched her own brand, Neurodiversity in Sport, using her personal journey to raise awareness, break down barriers, and champion inclusion in sport. Her tireless efforts are helping to ensure that sport is a safe and enjoyable space for everyone.

The Young Ambassadors programme is run by the Youth Sport Trust and funded by Sport Wales. The programme aims to see young people driving opportunity, engagement and change for other young people and developing as young leaders.

National School Sports Week Hero Award Winner: Ouskh

Ouskh has been awarded the National School Sports Week Hero Award, sponsored by Sports Direct for his extraordinary leadership and dedication to supporting others through sport. Despite facing significant adversity, Ouskh has volunteered his time to assist both students and teachers at Heath Park, helping to teach football, rounders, tennis, athletics, and cricket. His commitment was especially evident during National School Sports Week, where he gave up his spare time to officiate and support various activities. Ouskh's story is one of resilience, passion, and the power of sport to unite communities.

National School Sports Week is an annual nationwide celebration by the Youth Sport Trust aimed at inspiring schools and young people across the UK to get active. This year, it was powered by Sports Directs’ and Nikes Monster Kickabout.

Young Health Champion Award Winner: Luca

Luca has been recognised as this year’s Young Health Champion for his inspiring journey of resilience and leadership. After battling a brain tumour and spending significant time away from school, Luca returned to PE with determination, leading warm-ups and encouraging his peers. His involvement in the Inclusive Youth Leadership Programme and leadership in boccia and new age kurling events have made him a role model across the Humber region. Luca's courage in sharing his personal story has motivated students and staff alike to improve their wellbeing through sport.

The Inclusive Youth Leadership programme is run by the Youth Sport Trust and funded by Sport England. This programme aims to establish new regular inclusive sport clubs / unified sport activities led by young people for young people with and without SEND.   

Inspirational Female Leader Award Winners: Tegan & Madeleine

Tegan and Madeleine have been awarded the Inspirational Female Leader Award for their exceptional commitment to promoting girls’ participation in sport. Through their innovative volunteering, they organised a Primary School Flight and Gymnastics Festival, ran a self-made dance club, and led campaigns to improve canteen food and boost active lifestyles at Teign School. Their work has inspired students across the school, including SEND pupils, showing that sport and leadership are for everyone, regardless of background or ability.

The Youth Sport Trust Girls Active programme is funded by Sport England and the National Lottery aims to tackle the barriers girls experience and through cultivating a movement of girls and young women, empower them to take positive action through influencing, leading, and inspiring their peers.

Greatest Turnaround Through Sport Award Winner: Peter

Peter has been honoured with the Greatest Turnaround Through Sport Award for his incredible personal transformation through participation in sport. A child who faced many challenges, Peter discovered his confidence through the Generation Charnwood Programme, where his enthusiasm for tennis flourished. Peter's newfound self-belief has had a ripple effect in his school, where he now organises lunchtime football and leads sports events for younger students, proving how sport can change lives for the better.

Generation Charnwood will equip young people from the borough of Charnwood, with the relevant skills, resilience and improved wellbeing to overcome the immediate impact of Covid-19 and develop a 'workforce for the future,' through improved access to physical activity, sporting and leadership opportunities. This project is funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Inspirational Inclusive Leader Award Winner: Ellie

Ellie has been recognised with the Inspirational Inclusive Leader Award for her remarkable leadership and involvement in sport despite the challenges she has faced. Attending Wings School, Ellie transformed her behaviour through engagement in ice hockey and boxing, developing life skills and confidence along the way. As a leader in the Inclusive Youth Leadership programme and School Games, she has inspired other students by demonstrating that sport can create positive change, regardless of one’s starting point. Ellie continues to motivate others by sharing her story and promoting inclusive sports events.

School Games is funded by Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, the School Games is a framework delivered locally by a national network of 450 School Games Organisers who aspire to make a positive and meaningful difference to the lives of children and young people through sport and physical activity.

International Young Leader (Beckwith Care) Award Winner: Solomon

Solomon has been awarded the International Young Leader (Beckwith Care) Award for his impactful work coaching cricket to young refugees in Lebanon. A recipient of the Youth Sport Trust International cricketing scholarship, Solomon travelled to Beirut, where he used sport to engage children displaced by the Syrian conflict. His dedication to creating safe, positive spaces for young refugees has made a lasting impact on their lives, highlighting the power of sport to bring hope and resilience in even the most challenging circumstances.

The cricketing scholarship is an initiative developed by Youth Sport Trust International in partnership with Team Archie in the UK and the Alsama Project based in Beirut.
