BILD Malawi kicks off with community festival of sport

Today (28 August) marks the official launch of the Beckwith International Leadership Development programme (BILD) programme in Lilongwe, Malawi by Youth Sport Trust International in partnership with the Bhubesi Pride Foundation (BPF).

Specially invited guests including representatives from government ministries, local district councils, district sports officers and athlete role models attended the launch ceremony held at BPF’s community centre.

Over the last 10 days two Youth Sport Trust International expert trainers have delivered the first intensive youth sport leadership course of the programme, upskilling 18 local teachers and then mentoring them to train 20 young people to become sports leaders. With their newly developed coaching, organisational and communication skills, the young sports leaders have been responsible for designing and running an activity festival for local school children.

Viv Holt, Head of International Operations, said:

"Youth Sport Trust International began planning this initiative before the Covid-19 pandemic and so it is brilliant that it is finally coming to fruition. Sport for development is such a powerful way to improve young people’s lives, providing fun and enjoyment as well as the opportunity to develop valuable life skills. We have been working with outstanding, creative hardworking local trainers and young sports leaders all keen to make a difference and improve the lives of children and young people in Malawi. I look forward to hearing how BILD is implemented in the coming months."

Richard Bennett, Founder of BPF, said:

"It’s been a long and fascinating journey with BPF from humble beginnings and small rural outreach projects in Lilongwe village communities, to learning all the time from inspirational Malawians and constructing a game-changing community centre. I am delighted that our hard work and Malawi’s spirit has inspired YST International’s next BILD project. With facilitators now in-country with our team of staff and working with local teachers, following months of preparations, it’s a joy to see talented and passionate people bringing sporting activities and learning opportunities to life. Together, we’re equipping Malawi’s young leaders, for today, tomorrow and the future. It’s enormously exciting for all involved."

Funded by Youth Sport Trust International and delivered in partnership by Bhubesi Pride Foundation, BILD Malawi aims to reach 13,000 children and young people across Lilongwe. This four-year project will be achieved through a cascade training delivery module and school/community sports events for children.
