BILD develops life skills in young people

To tie in with the Malawi Vision 2063, an important part of the Beckwith International Leadership Development (BILD) programme’s initial training is an enterprise module which aims to enhance the life skills of young people.

12 out of the 20 young sports leaders who participated in the first training in August were not in employment, education or training. One such person was Vanessa Chimala, a 22-year-old young female from Lilongwe.

Vanessa was initially very quiet and reserved during the BILD training but afterwards she used the skills she had developed to draw up a business plan and kickstart a small business of selling Zigege (fried potatoes coated in food colouring). On a good day Vanessa can make K25,000 (£10) to cover her basic needs without having to rely on anyone.
