Being a Team Leader

I knew about the role from being a participant of residential camps back in 2019 but found the application for this year's cohort on social media. Having been a participant with YST in high school and being able to attend residential camps, the thing I remember the most was my Team Leaders and how welcoming they made me feel and how they helped me build up my confidence. It is these Team Leaders that made me realise that I wanted to be like them one day and help other young people the way they helped me. I feel there are many skills that you are able to learn through being part of the Team Leader programme, but for me, I would say I have been able to develop my adaptability more and have had to think on my feet to solve problems at events and camps.

Quick Fire Questions

Who is your role model and why?

For me, someone who I look up to is a coach called Mary Tembo. Mary is a coach that I worked with out in Zambia in 2023, and she showed me the power of sports for girls in her community and talked to me about the struggles and barriers she has faced as a female wanting to play football in Zambia and how she has overcome them and proved Zambian stereotypes and perceptions wrong.

What is your proudest sporting memory?

Being able to walk out onto the pitch for my Cup Final with my U10 girls as mascots and having them cheer me on in the stands.
